Cockroaches are oval in shape and flattened. The head is concealed from above by the pronotum. The legs are highly adapted for running. German cockroaches are approximately 5/8 of an inch long, dark brown in color with two tan stripes down the pronotum. The American cockroach is 1.5 inches in length and reddish brown to dark brown in color with light tan markings on the pronotum outlining two dark spots often referred to as eyes. Brownbanded cockroaches are approximately 5/8 inch in length and dark brown in color. Oriental cockroaches are 1 inch in length and dark brown in color, appearing to be almost black. The males have fully developed wings and the females have small underdeveloped wings. Smokeybrown cockroaches are 1.25 to 1.5 inches in length and are uniformly mahogany brown in color.
